A Comparative Study of Noun Phrase in English and Bahasa Karo

Abstract

This study investigates the similarities and differences noun phrase in English and Bahasa Karo. The objectives of the study to identify and describes the similarities and differences noun phrase in English and Bahasa Karo. The research was conducted by applying library research. The data were collected by selecticg the English and Bahasa Karo Text in magazines, Newspaper (tenah Budaya Karo) and daily conversation, retyping the sentences of the text which contain Noun Phrase, editing the text which contain noun phrase. After the data had been collected they were analyzed by some procedures: Listing the noun phrase in English and Bahasa Karo and making comparative study between English and Bahasa Karo. The finding of the study show that there are sxteen noun phrase in English and there are nine similar structure, the similar structure of noun phrase contained un determiner+ Noun, noun + noun, noun + Preposition, Preposition + Pronoun personal, Noun + Adjective Phrase, phrase, noun + infinitive clause, noun + relative clause and noun + clause introduced by temporal conjunction. And there are four structures noun phrase contained in English but not in Bahasa Karo. Adjective + noun, article + pronoun personal, noun + -ing participle clause, and noun + -ed participle clause, and there are only one structure noun phrase contained in Bahasa Karo but not in English and that are noun + adjective.
